You might think that teamwork is not essential in jobs such as development, engineering, or science. The trouble is that none of ansicht employees work alone. They are always interdependent on colleagues who need to know what is going on and especially at the intersection of their two jobs. The ability to participate in a teamwork environment is an essential workplace skill. With the current workplace emphasis on employees telecomm uting or working remotely, long-distance teamwork skills are fast becoming a must-have for employees who wish to work a flexible, non-traditional schedule. If so, how did you build the sense of teamwork in your workgroup from afar?Have you managed a group of employees in the past? If so, how did you build the groups sense of teamwork so that the members could work more cohesively together? Teams and Teamwork Job Interview Question Answers Depending on your work culture and environment, working with teams, working on a team, or working in a team atmosphere is likely important. You are attempting to identify how well your candidate works as a member of either a cross-functional or departmental team. You do not want to hire a candidate who tells you during the interview that his or her preferred environment at work is sitting alone in an offi ce getting work done if teamwork is the expected norm. So, during the interview, you are seeking signs that the candidate enjoys teamwork. You are listening to hear that the candidate values teamwork. You are assessing your candidates skill in the analysis as well. You want to listen to any references the candidate makes, during the whole interview and in the answer to any question, to working with a team. If your candidate frequently speaks in terms such as, we accomplished this goal, the team gave the task their best effort, and the team was happy with the outcome of the project, hes golden. A teamwork supporter frequently speaks in terms of the group. You also want to listen to any successes your candidate describes that was accomplished by a team or through teamwork. You are also listening to hear what kind of support and resources your candidate thinks teams need. You are also discovering, with these job interview questions about teamwork, what your candidate believes about why teams fail and why teams are successful. You are learning what must be present in the work environment for the candidate to experience teamwork.

How to maintain healthy eating habits but still enjoy the holidays
How to maintain healthy eating habits but still enjoy the holidaysHow to maintain healthy eating habits but still enjoy the holidaysThanksgiving is fast approaching, which meanspumpkin pie, pumpkin pie, and, oh, more pumpkin pie And then come theChristmas cookies. Even if youre not actively restricting food groups or trying to lose weight, the everyday healthy eating habits youve so proudly honed throughout the rest of the year can get hard to keep intact from Turkey Day to New Years with the constant onslaught of treats thats become synonymous with the holiday season. If you want to stay healthy this year without sacrificing any of the good stuff (mmm, mashed potatoes and caramel apples), portion control and mindfulness should remain your priorities.Eight health experts shared with us how to successfully keep behauptung pledges even during the most gluttonous days of the year.1. Eat your breakfastWith all the food preparation and fuss of Thanksgiving morning, breakfast might not be t he first thing on your mind, but it is important that you fuel up with something healthy at the beginning of the day. I usually have porridge or Greek yogurt with some blueberries and almonds. It is important that you get your metabolism going for the large meal that will ensue. By not skipping any meals throughout the day, you arent as tempted to overeat when the meal finally comes around. (Frida Harju-Westman, nutritionist forLifesum)2. Drink plenty of waterAvoid dehydration by drinking water throughout the day and refilling your glass during your holiday dinner. Dont let yourself be fooled into thinking youre hungry when you might, in fact, just be thirsty. If consuming alcoholic beverages, be sure to limit the sugary mixes and heavy, caloric beers. Alternate your alcohol with glasses of water. (Stacy Goldberg, nutrition consultant and founder ofSavorfull)3. Potluck itCall your host and say, Id love to bring something. What are you planning on serving? If you discover that one of the dishes is particularly unhealthy, offer to bring your own version. Sweet potatoes, for example, can be real killers - full of butter, syrup, and marshmallows. But when prepared with nutrition in mind, theyre perfectly healthy - and absolutely delicious. (Kimberly Gomer, director of nutrition forPritikin Longevity Center and Spa)4. Savor spicesWinter dishes are full of fragrant, flavorful spices, such as cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and rosemary. Instead of going for the butter and salt, learn to get creative cooking with these and other classic herbs and spices for your meals. (Abbie Gellman, nutrition expert and member ofJenny CraigScientific Advisory Board)5. Peruse, then chooseScan the buffet or food table before getting your plate. Decide what foods youreallywant to eat, and forget the rest. If you can take it or leave it, then leave it. And, when possible, bypass the fried and breaded items (think breaded mushrooms and mozzarella sticks) for roasted, baked, or grilled items , such as grilled shrimp kabobs and roasted vegetables. (Rima Kleiner, dietician and founder ofDish on Fish)6. Pick the right plateIt can be helpful to use smaller plates and bowls. Ever hear the phrase eating with your eyes? When you see a big plate with the correct serving sizes on there, you think, Wow, I wont be full off of that But when you use a smaller plate or bowl, you feel better about the amount you took and will probably get full from that portion without needing seconds. Sometimes, its all a visual game and not really about your stomach. (Joelle Malinowski, dietician and representative forNew York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics)7. Remember location, location, locationWhere you eat matters. Take your plated food and have a seat at the table. Sitting helps you slow down and be present. Although there will be times when eating on the go is unavoidable, the more attention we can commit to the food in front of us, the more likely we are to make healthier choices an d the more likely we are to recognize when were full. (Lindsey Kane, director of nutrition forSun Basket)8. SocializeMake it a point to walk around and socialize rather than sitting down with a drink and a plate of food. The more you are occupying your time with chatter, the less you will be tempted to indulge. Keep busy (Janine Delaney, fitness and lifestyle expert)This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

What are the advantages of working for bad bosses
What are the advantages of working for schwimmbad baboesWhat are the advantages of working for bad bossesA few years ago back, I enjoyed a long dinner with a couple good friends of mine - whose names must be kept anonymous given the facts that follow. I generally like to name names, but in this case, I will notlage out them and will omit identifying information (and change a couple key descriptions) to protect the innocent and the guilty. To get back to our dinner, we were among the first people at the place and the last to leave because we were having so much fun talking about many different topics - why incremental neuschpfung is sometimes under-appreciated and why breakthrough innovations are over glorified, how the best way to influence your spouse is through your kids rather than directly, and why the 130-proof bourbon the bartender gave us to try was a cool idea - especially because the ice cubes sank - although it tasted a bit too much like drinking lighter fluid. This piece focuses on the topic we kept coming back to the idea that, well, bad bosses arent all bad. We all had suffered through bad bosses, and had seen them do all kinds of damage. BUT during the course of the conversation, we started realizing that a bad boss (especially the kind who doesnt really have the power to hurt you very much) can be a great thing in some ways. The notion that you can learn a lot about what NOT to do from a bad boss has been around for decades. A charming version of this argument is in Robert Townsends classic Up The Organization, where he asserts that much of what he learned about being a good boss came from working for awful bosses at American Express early in his career. The focus of our conversation about bad bosses, however, turned a different direction. One of my friends had just ended a long stint working for a lousy boss, one who could be a selfish a**hole at times and was a legendary backstabber and narcissist. He talked about how great it was that this sel fish jerk had been removed from his management job and was now working a line job again, and how his new boss was thus far amazing - selfless, open, always thinking about was good for his group rather than himself, listening all the time, practicing constant empathy. This guy could be the poster child for my book Good Boss, Bad Boss.My other friend chimed in and talked about how he wished he had a boss like that. His boss was inept in many ways, especially committing sins of omission not going to meetings she should, not answering emails no matter how important, not following through on commitments, not jumping into help his team when she said she would, not having the guts to deal with performance problems, not reaching outside of the organization to develop a stronger network, and perhaps worst of all, constantly spending time planning and talking and brainstorming - but pretty much being unable or unwilling to actually get anything done. This boss could be the poster child for The Knowing-Doing Gap.Then, however, the conversation took an interesting turn that still gnaws at my mind. The guy with the good boss said to the one with the bad boss Be careful what you wish for, I got the great boss I want, and it has disadvantages. He went on to explain that, when he had that inept boss, he felt obligated to take only minimal steps to help his organization. He did everything he could to avoid contact with his boss - and would never lift a handglied to help that a**hole succeed. He wasnt the only one in his group who reacted that way Alienation was high and the commitment was low throughout. But he didnt just mess around at work. He devoted his energy to developing a big book of business and for developing a great reputation among clients. In other words, and this is the key point, he was treated sufficiently badly by his boss (as were others), that he felt free to act largely in his self-interest.BUT with this new and nearly model boss, he and many of his colle agues are spending much more time working to help the organization in all sorts of ways - to recruit new people, to repair broken procedures, to attend every group meeting, to develop business that helps the organization and not necessarily themselves. As a result, he is spending far less time doing things that benefited only him, and as a result, not only is making a bit less money, he is having less fun too. He now feels compelled to do things that he doesnt like to benefit his group and organization - because he respects and admires his boss so much, and didnt want to let him down. Then, we started quizzing my friend who still had the bad boss. Our friend has become a total star in recent years. The work his team does is bringing in a third of the groups revenue, he has freedom to do what he wants, his boss is rather afraid of him so almost never tells what to do, he is making a lot of money, and - while he is still doing many things to help his group succeed - he is far more respected both inside and outside the organization than his boss.As my friend with the new good boss warned him, if you got your dream boss - or worse yet they gave you your bosses job - you might feel great in some ways. But your life would change for the worse in other ways. You would start doing more things that benefited your organization that were not in your pure self-interest, you would spend more time doing things to help others that you would rather not do, you would go to more meetings with people who are of no interest to you - and even dislike - because doing so was for the greater good. The conversation went back and forth in this vein for a while. Although all three of us still believe that bad bosses suck on the whole, we started wondering if a more general, elaborate, and evidence-based argument might be made about the upsides of working for a loser. Some of the virtues of working for bad boss we thought of includeYou can learn what NOT to do.If you just have ordi nary competence, you look like a genius compared to your boss. You dont feel compelled to waste time doing extra things that help your group and organization. After all, if they arent doing much for you or are treating you badly (via your boss), why should you do anything to help them?Your boss might be so inept at implementation that it isnt worthwhile going to meetings, generating ideas, or suggesting now paths the organization might take. None of it will happen in anyway, so why waste your time?A lousy boss probably needs you more than a good boss - and thus you may have power - because you keep bailing him or her out, bringing in money or clients that he or she is too inept to do, and performing other competent acts that protect the boss and make the boss look better than he or she really deserves. If the boss leaves (perhaps is fired - but in too many organizations lousy bosses get promoted), and you get the job, people will think you are brilliant because of the power of psyc hological contrast.I am partly having fun here and partly serious. Yet as we talked about the good and bad bosses my friends had, and other bosses we had known and worked for, we realized that there are some under-appreciated virtues to having a bad boss.Bob Sutton is aStanford Professorwho studies and writes about leadership, organizational change, and navigating organizational life. 5 tips to warm up your winter workouts
5 tips to thermisch up your winter workouts5 tips to warm up your winter workoutsWilling yourself towork out outdoorsthrough the winteris hard enough as it is (seriously, go you). But unfortunately, the weather doesnt just make convincing yourself to exercise harder it makes the warm-up portion harder too. We focus a lot of our attention on how to stay healthy whengetting our sweat on in the scorching heat, but those shiver-filled workout sessions in the dead of winter also need our attention. So, for those of you who are platzset on running, swimming, or cycling no matter the temp, Matt Kite, a coach and director of education forD1 Training, has some tips about how to get and stay warm before and during your workout.1. Raise your heart rateIn the middle of summer, we can often get away with some half-assed stationary stretches (though even then theyre not ideal). But once the temperatures drop, you need to make sure youre doing dynamic movements during your warm-up. The key here is m aking sure to mix in dynamic movements that not only stretch the muscles but also warm them up thermally by challenging and raising your heart rate, Kite explains. He suggests beginning with full-body movement prep, such as plank walks, then progressing to high knees or burpees.2. Take your timeIts natural to want to get in and get out when it comes to winter workouts (or, rather, out and back in), but dont shorten your warm-up routine simply because its too cold, Kite cautions. He says the assumption that youll warm up mora quickly if you skip straight to cardio is an incorrect - and dangerous - one In fact, spend additional intentional time warming up the muscles and increasing blood flow. Plan on a good 15 to 20 minutes.3. Adjust your atmosphereBecause an extended warm-up can be challenging in inclement weather (hey, no one wants to stand in the cold longer than needed), Kite recommends changing where you do your warm-up altogether. Theres no reason not to bask in the warmth of your home, gym, etc. while you ready your body for the outdoor portion of your workout. Plus, this will accelerate the warm-up process. You still may need to do a few warm-ups outdoors, Kite says, but you will be much better primed heading outside after an indoor workout.4. Dress the partGearing up for your mid-winter workout requires some strategizing. Trap the heat intelligently, Kite says. If the weather is really brutally cold and even wet, keep those under-circulated areas like feet, hands, lower legs, and even arms covered with a breathable but warm clothing. (Marino wool and fleece are great, BTW.) But its not just a see-who-can-layer-the-most-clothing contest. Materials that lose their heat-retaining properties after they trap moisture - such as spandex and even 100 percent cotton - will actually make youcolderonce sweat starts to soak into them.5. Make it routineNow that you know you cant slack on this part of the exercise process, get into the habit of allotting the tim e for it. While its still bearable outside, Kite recommends developing a few well-rounded warm-up routines that you genuinely enjoy and can easily memorize. Once you have those down and it starts to get chillier, seamlessly schedule in the additional time it takes to warm up in the cold. If your group run or workout is at 6am every day, set your schedule and alarm 15 to 20 minutes earlier than usual, Kite suggests. And dont worry - itll only be a few more months until its warm againThis article was originally published on Brit + Co.

Accounting more than a numbers game
Accounting more than a numbers game Accounting more than a numbers gamePosted October 21, 2013, by Elizabeth Fenech Name any business and you can be sure there is an accountant working to ensure its success. Accounting professionals are in demand and the roles they are doing are more dynamic than ever. Gone are the days of accountants working as bean counters. The modern professional accountant is involved in problem solving, financial management and implementing strategic business plans. And accountants are also very well rewarded for their efforts. Accountants in demand As businesses fight back from the global financial crisis, demand for accountants has improved. As a result of the GFC, insolvency experience has become worth its weight in gold, and larger firms are looking for intermediate and senior-level candidates. At the same time, smaller firms have their eyes out for professionals with experience in self-managed super funds. So accountants really are in demand, from business es big and small. Recruitment activity is set to remain steady, with strength shown in the bedrngnis-for-profit and NGO area. Online retail, energy, oil gas, property, distribution and the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors are also showing strong hiring activity. On the downside, with the current global economic climate, overseas opportunities have dried up and many expats are heading back to the homeland. Overseas workers looking for prospects in Australia will also be hard-pressed to find something with the steady supply of domestic talent filling demand. Accountants salaries Accounting is regarded as a relatively high-paying profession. A graduate can expect to be paid $40,000 a year. While salary increases are currently at a minimum, over the course of a typical career, they can go beyond $150,000 or more. Public sector salaries are, in general, lower than private sector rates, but the public sector generally offers better non-cash benefits. Accounting graduates With th e end of the year approaching, accounting firms will be looking to get their hands on fresh blood with their annual graduate recruitment drives. Many firms judge candidates on their potential, not just their technical skillset alone, and are willing to put in the hours to train and upskill new staff which is good news for accounting students currently finishing up their degrees. Fringe benefits Investment banks offer hefty pay packets for accountants who join their corporations. Companies not able to offer the same level of salary are offering plenty of other perks for their accountants loyalty. Lots of companies are now offering corporate discounts on Internet access and credit cards they may also consider nine-day fortnights, additional superannuation and salary sacrifice arrangements. Many companies see a genuine need for greater flexibility to ensure a healthy worklife balance and have implemented new lifestyle cultures for accountants that have great appeal for their employees . Spice up your love life If youre a woman and your love life is floundering, you may consider taking up accounting. Studies show that for women in accounting, romantic prospects are fantastic and Bernard Salt, a well-known demographer who tracks social changes, has the research to back up the claim. Salt has developed something he calls a fella filter, which identifies where the best romantic prospects can be found in the population. It turns out that accounting has the highest number of rich, eligible men of any profession. Theres a great pool of undiscovered manhood out there and theyre all accountants. Theyre good catches because theyre earning a lot of money. Generally their income levels are much higher than average for their age group, said Salt. Getting the job Employers have become less focused on technical ability and are instead concentrating on a potential employees attitude and ability to work in a gruppe environment. To remedy economic uncertainty, many larger organis ations are pouring energy into recruitment to strengthen their hiring activities. Selection criteria and psychometric testing are common in accounting recruitment processes. Employers are seeking candidates who may be considered outside the box, and are opening their doors to other sectors to secure the right person for the job. Just starting out? Most accountants start out with a bachelor degree in either business or commerce, studying subjects in accounting, business, economics, English or maths.
