I generally like to name names, but in this case, I will notlage out them and will omit identifying information (and change a couple key descriptions) to protect the innocent and the guilty.To get back to our dinner, we were among the first people at the place and the last to leave because we were having so much fun talking about many different topics - why incremental neuschpfung is sometimes under-appreciated and why breakthrough innovations are over glorified, how the best way to influence your spouse is through your kids rather than directly, and why the 130-proof bourbon the bartender gave us to try was a cool idea - especially because the ice cubes sank - although it tasted a bit too much like drinking lighter fluid.This piece focuses on the topic we kept coming back to the idea that, well, bad bosses arent all bad. We all had suffered through bad bosses, and had seen them do all kinds of damage. BUT during the course of the conversation, we started realizing that a bad boss (especially the kind who doesnt really have the power to hurt you very much) can be a great thing in some ways.The notion that you can learn a lot about what NOT to do from a bad boss has been around for decades. A charming version of this argument is in Robert Townsends classic Up The Organization, where he asserts that much of what he learned about being a good boss came from working for awful bosses at American Express early in his career.The focus of our conversation about bad bosses, however, turned a different direction. One of my friends had just ended a long stint working for a lousy boss, one who could be a selfish a**hole at times and was a legendary backstabber and narcissist. He talked about how great it was that this sel fish jerk had been removed from his management job and was now working a line job again, and how his new boss was thus far amazing - selfless, open, always thinking about was good for his group rather than himself, listening all the time, practicing constant empathy. This guy could be the poster child for my book Good Boss, Bad Boss.My other friend chimed in and talked about how he wished he had a boss like that. His boss was inept in many ways, especially committing sins of omission not going to meetings she should, not answering emails no matter how important, not following through on commitments, not jumping into help his team when she said she would, not having the guts to deal with performance problems, not reaching outside of the organization to develop a stronger network, and perhaps worst of all, constantly spending time planning and talking and brainstorming - but pretty much being unable or unwilling to actually get anything done. This boss could be the poster child for The Knowing-Doing Gap.Then, however, the conversation took an interesting turn that still gnaws at my mind. The guy with the good boss said to the one with the bad boss Be careful what you wish for, I got the great boss I want, and it has disadvantages.He went on to explain that, when he had that inept boss, he felt obligated to take only minimal steps to help his organization. He did everything he could to avoid contact with his boss - and would never lift a handglied to help that a**hole succeed. He wasnt the only one in his group who reacted that way Alienation was high and the commitment was low throughout. But he didnt just mess around at work. He devoted his energy to developing a big book of business and for developing a great reputation among clients. In other words, and this is the key point, he was treated sufficiently badly by his boss (as were others), that he felt free to act largely in his self-interest.BUT with this new and nearly model boss, he and many of his colle agues are spending much more time working to help the organization in all sorts of ways - to recruit new people, to repair broken procedures, to attend every group meeting, to develop business that helps the organization and not necessarily themselves. As a result, he is spending far less time doing things that benefited only him, and as a result, not only is making a bit less money, he is having less fun too. He now feels compelled to do things that he doesnt like to benefit his group and organization - because he respects and admires his boss so much, and didnt want to let him down.Then, we started quizzing my friend who still had the bad boss. Our friend has become a total star in recent years. The work his team does is bringing in a third of the groups revenue, he has freedom to do what he wants, his boss is rather afraid of him so almost never tells what to do, he is making a lot of money, and - while he is still doing many things to help his group succeed - he is far more respected both inside and outside the organization than his boss.As my friend with the new good boss warned him, if you got your dream boss - or worse yet they gave you your bosses job - you might feel great in some ways. But your life would change for the worse in other ways. You would start doing more things that benefited your organization that were not in your pure self-interest, you would spend more time doing things to help others that you would rather not do, you would go to more meetings with people who are of no interest to you - and even dislike - because doing so was for the greater good.The conversation went back and forth in this vein for a while. Although all three of us still believe that bad bosses suck on the whole, we started wondering if a more general, elaborate, and evidence-based argument might be made about the upsides of working for a loser. Some of the virtues of working for bad boss we thought of includeYou can learn what NOT to do.If you just have ordi nary competence, you look like a genius compared to your boss.You dont feel compelled to waste time doing extra things that help your group and organization. After all, if they arent doing much for you or are treating you badly (via your boss), why should you do anything to help them?Your boss might be so inept at implementation that it isnt worthwhile going to meetings, generating ideas, or suggesting now paths the organization might take. None of it will happen in anyway, so why waste your time?A lousy boss probably needs you more than a good boss - and thus you may have power - because you keep bailing him or her out, bringing in money or clients that he or she is too inept to do, and performing other competent acts that protect the boss and make the boss look better than he or she really deserves.If the boss leaves (perhaps is fired - but in too many organizations lousy bosses get promoted), and you get the job, people will think you are brilliant because of the power of psyc hological contrast.I am partly having fun here and partly serious. Raise your heart rateIn the middle of summer, we can often get away with some half-assed stationary stretches (though even then theyre not ideal). But once the temperatures drop, you need to make sure youre doing dynamic movements during your warm-up. The key here is m aking sure to mix in dynamic movements that not only stretch the muscles but also warm them up thermally by challenging and raising your heart rate, Kite explains. He suggests beginning with full-body movement prep, such as plank walks, then progressing to high knees or burpees.2. Take your timeIts natural to want to get in and get out when it comes to winter workouts (or, rather, out and back in), but dont shorten your warm-up routine simply because its too cold, Kite cautions. He says the assumption that youll warm up mora quickly if you skip straight to cardio is an incorrect - and dangerous - one In fact, spend additional intentional time warming up the muscles and increasing blood flow. Plan on a good 15 to 20 minutes.3. Adjust your atmosphereBecause an extended warm-up can be challenging in inclement weather (hey, no one wants to stand in the cold longer than needed), Kite recommends changing where you do your warm-up altogether. Theres no reason not to bask in the warmth of your home, gym, etc. while you ready your body for the outdoor portion of your workout. Plus, this will accelerate the warm-up process. You still may need to do a few warm-ups outdoors, Kite says, but you will be much better primed heading outside after an indoor workout.4. Dress the partGearing up for your mid-winter workout requires some strategizing. Trap the heat intelligently, Kite says. If the weather is really brutally cold and even wet, keep those under-circulated areas like feet, hands, lower legs, and even arms covered with a breathable but warm clothing. (Marino wool and fleece are great, BTW.) But its not just a see-who-can-layer-the-most-clothing contest. Materials that lose their heat-retaining properties after they trap moisture - such as spandex and even 100 percent cotton - will actually make youcolderonce sweat starts to soak into them.5. Make it routineNow that you know you cant slack on this part of the exercise process, get into the habit of allotting the tim e for it. While its still bearable outside, Kite recommends developing a few well-rounded warm-up routines that you genuinely enjoy and can easily memorize. Once you have those down and it starts to get chillier, seamlessly schedule in the additional time it takes to warm up in the cold. If your group run or workout is at 6am every day, set your schedule and alarm 15 to 20 minutes earlier than usual, Kite suggests. If sales were weak, the marketing team would be charged with creating a different marketing plan and to redesign the go to market strategy. While many large businesses still operate in the traditional marketing then sales model, most small to mid-sized businesses have merged these two departments into one. Doing so not only reduces overhead but also can provide a few distinct advantages. This merging has created several career opportunities for creative thinking sales professionals who can benefit from the advantages of a dual-role position. The first being asking your employer for training with their marketing department employees for those in sales and asking for sales training for those in marketing. Very few employers would deny an employees request for additional training and allow  you an easy, free and readily available access to on the job training. Another option for cross training is to reach out to local colleges and universities for continuing education courses. While this option may take longer, take more of your personal time and cost you more capital, the resume-improvements and the visible signs of self-drive can more than make up for the costs.

They are a cause of ongoing frustration for many job seekers, and there are various reasons why they exist. Genuinely Hidden Job In this scenario, there is a job opening, but it already has been filled through informal networking processes. However,  the public job posting is a mere formality undertaken to comply with human resources department rules that mandate the advertising of open positions.   In such a situation, people responding to the formal public job listing actually have no chance at all of ever landing the position. Not only are they wasting their time in applying, but they also do not know that they are. In some cases, however, applicants for such phantom jobs actually be putting themselves under consideration for future openings, if their credentials are impressive enough. This is most likely in situations where the job posting is being worked upon by a recruiting firm (also known as a job placement or headhunting firm) and the applicant has made contact with a member of that firms staff. Delayed Communication Flows Even if the job is indeed filled through an open and competitive process, sometimes a recruiter or job board may not be informed of this in a timely fashion, and thus the posting may persist after the job has ceased to be open. This is less likely and less excusable in the case of job postings maintained by the human resources department on a companys own website, but such errors are indeed possible and do occur from time to time. Likewise, a job opening may continue to be advertised erroneously even after it has been eliminated, such as due to a hastily imposed budget exercise. Postings Designed for Future Needs Some companies have frequent needs to fill job vacancies on a timely basis, as the result of a regular turnover. In some of these cases, these vacancies stretch across broad categories of jobs. As a result, these employers often advertise for such jobs before the openings emerge, to secure a pipeline of qualified candidates that can be tapped in a hurry once the need arises. In this case, a job applicant may find that the advertised job is not currently available, but instead may be so at some indeterminate time in the future. Competing Postings In some cases, the hiring company may have hiring needs in various areas, but only the budget to add a subset of these people. Once the aggregate hiring limit has been reached, the remaining job postings effectively become null and void. Applicants for the latter then will find that they have been seeking jobs that have vanished. Risks to the Company Becoming known as a company that regularly makes phantom job postings is likely to have a highly negative impact on outside reputation and internal morale. The most highly qualified external candidates, those with the widest employment options, are bound to shun a company with a reputation for dealing in bad faith with applicants, by advertising openings that do not really exist. Similarly, employees will become demoralized if they do not believe that they have a fair chance at advancing internally  and if promotions appear to be tainted by cronyism and internal politics. Good news! Job postings contain more than just hiring criteria. By taking a closer look at job postings, you can identify topics of importance and pick up on nuanced information to help you prepare better applications. Here is what to look for when deconstructing a job posting: Job Title Align your experience with what the company is looking for by using the same language they do in the job title. For example, if you are a public relations officer and they are looking for a communications specialist, call yourself a communications specialist or utilize parentheses on past similar roles to match the job title if applicable (e.g. Public Relations Officer (Communications Specialist). Job Number If a job number is available, include it in your email, cover letter, and even filenames. This will make it easier for those receiving, searching, and processing applications to pay attention to your submission. HR Manager’s Name and Contact Details Use this information to personalize your applicationspecifically, your cover letter. This not only shows that you paid attention and read the job posting but also demonstrates professional courtesy and respect. You can also use this information to research the hiring manager with the goal of finding a way to connect with them.  If the posting does not include this information, be resourceful. Try locating it online, through your network, or even by calling the company and asking for it. Location If you are applying for a position across town or across the country, be proactive and address any concerns the employer may have about daily commutes or plans for relocation in your resume or cover letter. Posting Date and Application Deadline Show employers you are prepared and serious about finding work by submitting your application ahead of the submission deadline. Research shows that, on average, 60% of applications are submitted within seven days of a position being posted. Applications submitted early in the application window do better than those submitted later, because there is less competition and employers are not yet overwhelmed with candidates.   Application Instructions Be on the lookout for specific application instructions such as, “Submit your resume, cover letter, references, and a sample of your work”; “Please indicate your salary expectations”; or, “No follow-up calls.” There is always a reason behind these requests and applicants whose submissions follow the instructions are more likely to be considered. Qualifications When reviewing job requirements, a good rule of thumb is that you should satisfy 75-80% of the duties listed for the role. That said, understand that “credential creep”when employers include an excessive list of hiring criteriais a real thing. Pay special attention to the duties listed first, as job ads are typically written in order of importance.
